conference "Public space in change"

7 and 8 September 2006
Gliptoteka HAZU, Medvedgradska 2

The conference will gather some prominent connoisseurs - architects, art historians, urban anthropologists, psychoanalysts, theologians, artists, politicians and investors in analytics, anticipation and creation on urban change in Zagreb and Croatia. Considering the wide span of problematic and the danger of getting stuck on general spots as well as considering interdisciplinary approach as a possible direction, we decided to divide this debate in three parts:

1. Disappearance of public space - 7 September 2006 at 11am
2. Positioning and destigmatising the role of public and monumental sculpture in local space - 7 September 2006 at 7pm
3. Presentation of possible, innovative approaches and models of cooperation between artists, architects, art historians, sociologists, politicians, theologians, public in the wider sense and determination of possible solutions - 8 September 2006 at 11am

Conference will be assembled to determine and diagnose the change in the public space considering the location, content, purpose and control (example: plazza in the shopping centre) of the specific place, to redefine public space using concrete examples. The attempt of this conference is, next to analyses and valorisation of the present situation, to propose possible perspectives of the future shapes of public space and necessities for them. Is the process of rethinking the public and monumental sculpture reversible in a time of the technological development of our environment and the transformation of planned natural city scapes (designed parks) into the media landscape, are the pre-modern figuration and realism dominant, is the retro taste of 19 century dominant in the influential circles? Are there any new planned green areas, is there any need for them, what to do with existing (modernistic building has green area as a part of the project), what with the monuments built up without tender, what to do with monuments which do not belong to the spirit of time, is the sculpture today "broadened media", did transition from the context become concept...
