During the research for the "mnemonic nonstop" project, Jochen Roller and Martin Nachbar explored various urban spaces with the help of dérive, a French Situationists' technique, which they adapted for their choreographic work.
The concept of the dérive suggests an alternative form of movement through the urban space: instead of getting from A to B in the most effective (meaning the shortest or quickest way) one follows the traces of a different movement concept. This is derived, for example, from an algorithm (such as "first right, second left") or it is based on the manipulated maps (e.g. "use a sewing stencil as a city map").
The interactive city tour offers an insight into this research and forms the second, experiential part of the "mnemonic nonstop": an interactive exploration of the city in which the piece is playing. Martin Nachbar explain his version of the dérive to the participants, give a movement score for the given city space and invite them to get lost in their city; to perceive it in a new light and, maybe, to find themselves in unexpected situations.
Following the dérive, there will be a talk with the artist.
Martin Nachbar is a dancer, performer and choreographer. Occasionally, he also writes for various European dance and theatre magazines (etcetera, Brussels; Dance Theatre Journal, London; ballettanz, Berlin). He was trained at the School for New Dance Development, Amsterdam, in New York City and at the PARTS, Brussels. Nachbar collaborated in different functions with artists from different fields (Thomas Plischke, Vera Mantero, Les Ballets C. de la B., Meg Stuart, Thomas Lehmen, Benjamin Schweitzer, Joachim Schlömer, Carlos Pez, Martine Pisani, Paul Hendrikse, and others). In 2005, he co-organized the "meeting on dance education 2005" at the fabrik Potsdam and collaborated with Jochen Roller to make the "mnemonic nonstop". His own work includes solo and duet work (among which is also the "ja, ja - der dritte mann", winner of the Ludwigshafen Choreography Award 2006). His work was presented throughout South-America and Europe. Recently, the Kunststiftung NRW awarded Nachbar with a grant. In 2006, the apap (advancing performing arts projects) invited him to work on six guided tours on the theme of accidents in six European cities.
