Presentation of FILM MUTATIONS - festival-symposium of invisible film

This international project with the subject of film/cinephile mutations, of the changing map 
of global film/cinephilia, was launched in a programmatic letter by the eminent American film essayist and critic Jonathan Rosenbaum, while discussing the phenomenon of "the death of film" with five film theorists: Alexander Horwath (Vienna), Nicole Brenez (Paris), Kent Jones (New York), Adrian Martin (Melbourne), and Raymond Bellour (Paris). Their epistolary essays and the letters of film theorists from other countries which followed were published in the book Movie Mutations: The Changing Face of World Cinephilia (edited by Jonathan Rosenbaum and Adrian Martin in 2003).
Movie Mutations: Festival-symposium of invisible film will extend its research on this cultural phenomenon from the perspective of the closing of the cinematheque programme in the beginning of the 1990's and the closing of cinemas in Zagreb and in smaller towns, bringing together essays in film theory by the authors mentioned and the films which inspired them. 
From July 9th to 14th Jonathan Rosenbaum, Raymond Bellour, Alexander Horwath, Nicole Brenez, Adrian Martin, and Kent Jones will present their film theory programmes and bring back to the "big screen" of the Tuškanac cinema the films of Jim Jarmusch, Abbas Kiarostami, Philippe Garrel, Raoul Ruiz, Chris Marker, Ken Jacobs, Philippe Grandrieux, Oshima Nagisa, Eric Khoo, Yervant Gianikian and Angela Ricci Lucchi, Darezhan Omirbaev, Peter Weiss, Raymund Gleyzer, Holger Meins, Waël Noureddine, Jang Sun-Woo, and many others. Besides the cinema, the lecturers and some of the directors in the programme will appear at the Academy of Drama Arts, the Academy of Fine Arts, and the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb. A symposium on the death and/or mutation of film as well as a talk on the tendencies and the "archaeology of the possible future" of the film medium and of contemporary foreign and Croatian film will take place at the Journalists' Home.
